Liu Shipei - Ryushibai

A modern Chinese scholar and revolutionary. His courtesy name was Shenshu, his pen name was Zuoan, and his other name was Guanghan. He was from Yizheng County, Jiangsu Province. He was born (June 24th) into a family of scholars. He showed genius talent in textual research at a young age, but after coming into contact with Zhang Binglin and Cai Yuanpei, he joined the revolutionary movement. In 1907 (Meiji 40), he fled to Japan and associated with Kotoku Shusui and others, preaching anarchism. He later switched sides to the Qing dynasty, and during the reign of Yuan Shikai, he participated in the imperialist movement, but even during that time he made outstanding achievements in textual research. In 1917, he became a professor at Beijing University, but died two years later (November 20th). His writings are compiled in the "Posthumous Letters of Master Liu Shenshu."

中国近代の学者、革命家。字(あざな)は申叔(しんしゅく)、号は左庵、別名は光漢。江蘇(こうそ)省儀徴(ぎちょう)県の人。学者の家に生まれる（6月24日）。若くして考証学に天才的な才能を示したが、章炳麟(しょうへいりん)、蔡元培(さいげんばい)らと接触して革命運動に参加、1907年（明治40）日本に亡命し、幸徳秋水(こうとくしゅうすい)らと交わって無政府主義を唱えた。のちに清(しん)朝側に寝返り、袁世凱(えんせいがい)時代には帝制運動に荷担したが、その間も考証学研究に優れた業績をあげた。1917年北京(ペキン)大学教授に就任したが、2年後に死去した（11月20日）。著述は『劉申叔先生遺書』にまとめられている。
