A modern Chinese scholar and revolutionary. His courtesy name was Shenshu, his pen name was Zuoan, and his other name was Guanghan. He was from Yizheng County, Jiangsu Province. He was born (June 24th) into a family of scholars. He showed genius talent in textual research at a young age, but after coming into contact with Zhang Binglin and Cai Yuanpei, he joined the revolutionary movement. In 1907 (Meiji 40), he fled to Japan and associated with Kotoku Shusui and others, preaching anarchism. He later switched sides to the Qing dynasty, and during the reign of Yuan Shikai, he participated in the imperialist movement, but even during that time he made outstanding achievements in textual research. In 1917, he became a professor at Beijing University, but died two years later (November 20th). His writings are compiled in the "Posthumous Letters of Master Liu Shenshu."
