…He was a professor at the University of Bonn and one of the revolutionaries of 1848. He participated in the Baden-Pfalz uprising in the spring of 1849 and was arrested and sentenced to life imprisonment, but in November 1850, with the help of his former student and comrade, Carl Schurz (1829-1906), he escaped from Spandau prison and fled to London. At the beginning of his exile, he was made the leader of the German Revolutionary Bonds plan and worked hard, but eventually he completely withdrew from the political scene. …
