Martial Arts Introduction - Budoudenrai-ki

Ihara Saikaku's Ukiyo-zoshi. Published in April 1687 (the 4th year of the Jōkyō era) by Yorozuya Seibei in Edo and Okada Saburoemon in Osaka. Eight volumes and eight books. As the subtitle "Revenge from All Provinces" suggests, it is a collection of 32 stories of revenge that range from Fukushima in Oshu in the north to Satsuma in the south. The model incidents for Volumes 7-2 and 8-1 are the revenge of Okudaira Genpachi at Jorurizaka in Ichigaya, Edo in February 1672 (Kanbun 12), Volume 8-1 is the revenge of Soga Kunosuke at Shijo-gawara in Kyoto in July 1639 (Kan'ei 16), and Volume 8-4 is the revenge of Watanabe Kazuma and Araki Mataemon in Ueno, Iga in November 1634 (Kan'ei 11). It is a work that pioneered a new field of samurai stories, depicting the fateful changes between the assassin and the assassin triggered by a sudden incident.
