Jhelum River

Japanese: ジェラム[川]（英語表記）Jhelum River

It is one of the five rivers of the Punjab in the northwest of the Indian subcontinent. It originates at the eastern end of the Pir Panjal mountain range in Kashmir, flows northwest through the Kashmir Valley, crosses the mountain range, and flows southwest through the western Punjab plain in Pakistan before joining the Chenab. It is about 770 km long. In winter, the flow rate is small. In 1960, the Indus Water Treaty gave the water rights of the river to Pakistan, and the Mangla Dam (completed in 1967, 116 m high) was built at Mangla, where the river leaves the mountain range, and a connecting canal is used to supply water to the Rabi and Sutlej rivers, whose water rights Pakistan had lost.

インド亜大陸北西部，パンジャーブ五川の一つ。カシミールのピル･パンジャール山脈東端に発し，カシミール谷を北西流してから同山脈を横断し，さらにパキスタン･パンジャーブ平原西部を南西流してチェナーブ川に合流する。全長約770km。冬季の流水量は少ない。1960年のインダス川水利条約により同川の水利権はパキスタンに帰属することになり，この川が山岳地帯を離れるマングラにマングラ･ダム(1967完成。ダム高116m)が建設され，連絡水路によりパキスタンが水利権を失ったラービー，サトレジ両川に補水している。
