Kabardino-Balkar [Republic] (English spelling)
A republic in the southwest of the Russian Federation, in the North Caucasus. Under the former Soviet Union, it belonged to the Russian Republic as the Kabardino-Balkaria Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic, but after the collapse of the Soviet Union, it became the current republic and signed the Russian Federation Treaty in March 1992. The region is called Kabarda and Balkaria. Its area is 12,500 km2, and its population is 753,000 (1989). Its capital is Nalchik. In September 1921, the Kabardino-Balkaria Autonomous Oblast was established, which was reorganized in January 1922 as the Kabardino-Balkaria Autonomous Oblast, and on December 5, 1936, it became an autonomous republic.
