The domain's kokudaka was 58,000 koku in the Keicho land survey, over 83,000 koku in the Kan'ei land survey, and reached 127,000 koku at the end of the Edo period. 江戸時代長門(ながと)国豊浦(とよら)郡長府(現、山口県下関市長府)に藩庁をおいた外様(とざま)藩。長州藩(萩藩)の支藩の一つ。藩校は敬業館(けいぎょうかん)。1600年(慶長(けいちょう)5)、毛利元就(もうりもとなり)の4男穂田元清(ほいだもときよ)の次男で、毛利輝元(てるもと)の養子となった秀元(ひでもと)が立藩。下関海峡に面した長州藩領東部3万6200石を輝元から分与されたもので、53年(承応(じょうおう)2)には秀元の次男元知(もととも)が1万石を分与されて清末(きよすえ)藩が成立した。本藩の長州藩に後継者がないときは筆頭支藩から養子を出す定めがあり、そのため3代綱元(つなもと)と8代匡敬(まさたか)を長州藩主として送り出した。石高は慶長検地で5万8000石、寛永検地で8万3000石余、幕末期には12万7000石に達した。秀元から数えて14代続き、1865年(慶応1)には清末藩も含めて直轄領にしようとした本藩と対立したが、のち和解してともに戊辰(ぼしん)戦争を戦った。71年(明治4)の廃藩置県により、豊浦県を経て山口県に編入された。◇豊浦藩、府中(ふちゅう)藩ともいう。
