A German Jew, he is a leading scholar who built the foundations of modern Jewish studies. Initially, he founded the Jewish Cultural and Scientific Association in Berlin with Heine and others, and devoted himself to the study of Jewish literary history, and his scholarship is still regarded as a model today. At the same time, he fought for Jewish emancipation and free thought, and acted as a mediator between Orthodox and Reform Judaism, demonstrating his character and ability as a European. His major works include Lectures for Jewish Worship (1832), Poetry of the Medieval Synagogue (1855), and A Literary History of Synagogue Poetry (1866).

ドイツ系ユダヤ人で,近代ユダヤ学の基礎を築いた代表的学者。当初H.ハイネらとベルリンにユダヤ人文化学術連盟を設立,ユダヤ文学史の研究に打ちこみ,その学殖は今日も範とされる。同時にユダヤ人解放と自由思想のために闘い,ユダヤ教の正統派と改革派調停役も務め,広くヨーロッパ人としての人格・力量を示した。主著に《ユダヤ人の礼拝講演集》(1832),《中世シナゴーグの詩文》(1855),《シナゴーグ詩文の文学史》(1866)などがある。
