Nanjo Dance - Nanjo Dance

This is a Furyu-style drum dance. It is handed down in Shinjo, Kitahiroshima-cho, Yamagata-gun, Hiroshima Prefecture, Iwakuni City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, and Yumoto, Nagato City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, but the songs and choreography are different. It is said that this dance is associated with the fact that when the army of Kikkawa Motoharu, the lord of Shinjo Castle, attacked the castle of the Nanjo clan at Hagoromoishi in Hoki (Tottori Prefecture), he had them dress up as dancers and enter the castle, resulting in victory. It is said that it was later moved from Shinjo to Iwakuni, and then to Yumoto. In Yumoto, it is dedicated at the Akasaki Shrine festival on September 9th and 10th. The composition is large-scale, with two people holding a windpipe with a cross-shaped frame decorated with paper tassels in a circle, two people playing the drums, two people pulling the sasara, two children playing the gongs, and one Shinpote as the middle dance, surrounded by 28 people performing side dances. The dance consists of a michiyuki and a main dance.

風流(ふりゅう)系の太鼓踊。広島県山県(やまがた)郡北広島(きたひろしま)町新庄(しんじょう)、山口県岩国市、同長門(ながと)市湯本(ゆもと)に伝承されるが、曲目、振りは異なる。新庄の城主吉川元春(きっかわもとはる)の軍が伯耆(ほうき)（鳥取県）羽衣石の南条氏の城を攻めたとき、踊り子に扮装(ふんそう)させて城内に入れ勝利を収めたことにちなむ踊りと伝えられる。のち新庄から岩国に、そして湯本にも移し伝えられたという。湯本では9月9、10日の赤崎神社の祭礼に奉納される。その構成は大掛りで、丸に十文字の骨組を紙の房で飾った吹貫(ふきぬき)持ちが2人、太鼓打ち2人、ささら引き2人、鉦(かね)打ち童子2人、新発意(しんぽて)1人を中踊として、周りを側踊(かわおどり)28人が取り巻く。踊りは道行と本踊からなる。
