Nanjo Fumio - Nanjo Bunyu

A priest of the Otani sect of Shinshu Buddhism. He devoted himself to studying Buddhist scriptures in Sanskrit. Born at Seiun-ji Temple in Ogaki, Gifu Prefecture, he was adopted by Nanjo Jinkou (1841-1887) of Okunen-ji Temple in Nanjo County, Fukui Prefecture in 1871 (Meiji 4). In 1868, he entered the Takakura school of the Otani sect. In 1876, he studied in England, where he studied Sanskrit under Max Muller, and returned to Japan in 1884. He held positions including lecturer at the University of Tokyo and professor at Shinshu University (the precursor to Otani University), and served as the second president of Otani University from 1914 (Taisho 3) to 1923. He has many research achievements, but is best known for A Catalogue of the Chinese Translation of the Buddhist Tripitaka (1883), which he published while studying abroad at Oxford. His career is detailed in his autobiography, Kaikyuroku.

真宗大谷(おおたに)派の僧侶(そうりょ)。サンスクリット語による仏典研究に力を尽くす。岐阜県大垣(おおがき)の誓運寺(せいうんじ)に生まれ、1871年(明治4)福井県南条郡の憶念寺(おくねんじ)南条神興(じんこう)(1841―1887)の養子となる。1868年、大谷派の高倉(たかくら)学寮に入学。1876年にはイギリスに留学し、マックス・ミュラーに師事してサンスクリット語学を学び、1884年に帰国。東京大学講師、真宗大学(大谷大学の前身)教授などを歴任し、1914年(大正3)から1923年まで大谷大学の第2代学長を務めた。多くの研究業績があるが、留学中にオックスフォードで刊行した『大明三蔵聖教(たいみんさんぞうしょうぎょう)目録』A Catalogue of the Chinese Translation of the Buddhist Tripitaka(1883)は、「南条目録」として著名。その経歴は『懐旧録』(自叙伝)に詳しい。
