Urdaneta - Urdaneta (English spelling) Andrés de Urdaneta
1498‐1568
Spanish navigator. Born into an aristocratic family, he initially joined the military. After the success of the Magellan Expedition, he participated in the Loaiza Expedition, which was sent to the Orient in 1525 by King Carlos I, and reached the Maluku Islands, where he stayed for about 10 years. During this time, he fought against Portugal and acquired knowledge of the region's geography and navigation, returning to the Philippines in 1536 as one of the few survivors. Tired of his life of maritime adventures, he traveled to Mexico in 1542 and took the Augustinian priesthood. In 1559, King Philip II asked him to be the commander of an expedition to conquer the Philippines, but he firmly refused, recommending Legazpi instead.
