Nanjo clan

Japanese:
Nanjo clan
A powerful local lord in medieval Hoki Province. According to legend, he was a member of the Sasaki Shioya clan, the guardian of Izumo, and his ancestor Sadamune built a castle in Ueishi, Kawamura County, in 1366 (Shohei 21, Joji 5) and made it his base. During the Sengoku period, he organized the local lords and local lords in the surrounding area into his own vassals, and grew into a powerful local lord who exerted his influence over the Kawamura County and eastern Hoki region. He was temporarily driven out of the castle by Amago Tsunehisa, but regained his former territory with the fall of the Amago clan. In 1579 (Tensho 7), due to a conflict with the Sugihara clan of Nishi-Hoki, who were famous alongside the Nanjo clan of Hagoromoishi, the clan had established ties with the Kansai region, and in 1582 they were attacked by the Mori clan and surrendered to their forces. However, in 1585 a peace agreement was made between the Mori clan and Toyotomi Hideyoshi, and the Nanjo clan regained their position as lords of Hagoromoishi Castle and the three counties of Kawamura, Kume, and Yatsuhashi.
