Nonstandard analysis is a new method that can be applied to almost any field of mathematics while directly rationalizing infinitesimal arithmetic of the 17th and 18th centuries. In G.W. Leibniz and his school, the differential quotient dy / dx of a function f ( x ) is the quotient of the infinitesimal quantity dy = f ( x + dx ) - f ( x ) divided by the infinitesimal quantity dx . This way of thinking and notation greatly developed calculus, but the existence of infinitesimal quantities was questioned from the beginning, and all attempts to rationalize it failed.
