This word comes from the diminutive biblion (biblia is plural) of biblos, which refers to the inner bark of the papyrus stem, the raw material for paper. It was a common noun meaning a pamphlet or part of a book, but it became a proper noun in the Christian church, and from around the 5th century, the whole Bible came to be called biblia.
