Nicholas [I] - Nicholas
Russian Emperor (reigned 1825-1855). Son of Paul I. He suppressed the Decembrist revolt, established a secret police (the "Third Department" directly under the emperor) and ruled in a typical autocratic manner. He attempted to conquer the Balkans, but failed in the Russo-Turkish War and the Crimean War.
