J. Lamarck's major work. Published in 1809. 2 volumes. Along with "Systema invertebrates" (1801) and "Historia invertebrates" (15), it details the theory of evolution known as Lamarckism. These books can be said to have founded the idea of evolution as a theory, but it was not accepted at the time and emerged as Neo-Lamarckism in the 1870s after Lamarck's death. Part 1 summarizes the theory of evolution, namely the theory of use and disuse, and the inheritance of acquired characteristics, and also presents the fundamental problem of animal classification and the first proposal for a phylogenetic tree. The basic idea of the whole work is that animals have a latent tendency for progressive development.
