Akadomari [village] - Akadomari

Japanese: 赤泊[村] - あかどまり

A village in Sado County facing the Sado Straits, south of the Kosado Hills on Sado Island, Niigata Prefecture. Population 3,342 (1995). Most of the village area is mountainous, and in addition to growing vegetables and fruit, coastal fishing is also thriving. Akadomari Port, the central port, is the closest (about 40 km) to Teradomari Town in Mishima County on the mainland, and the Kosado Hills behind it block the northwest winter monsoons, so it has long been the gateway to Sado, and in the mid-Edo period it was a bustling crossing point for magistrates and government officials. It continued to flourish as a good port, but the steamship route between Ryōtsu (Ebisu) and Niigata, which began in the early Meiji period, became popular, and the Kosado Hills became an obstacle to land transport between the Kuninaka Plain, so the Teradomari route was discontinued and the village fell into decline.

新潟県佐渡島の小佐渡丘陵南側，佐渡海峡に面する佐渡郡の村。人口3342(1995)。村域の大半は山地で，野菜，果樹の栽培が行われるほか，沿岸漁業が盛んである。中心の赤泊港は本土の三島郡寺泊町に最も近く(約40km)，背後の小佐渡丘陵が冬の北西季節風をさえぎるため，古くから佐渡の玄関口となり，江戸時代中ごろには奉行，役人などの渡海場としてにぎわった。その後も良港として栄えたが，明治初期に始められた両津(夷（えびす）)～新潟間の汽船の航路が盛んになり，また小佐渡丘陵が国中平野との陸上輸送の障害となったため，寺泊航路は廃航状態となり衰退した。
