Joachim

Japanese: ヨアヒム
Joachim
German violinist, conductor, and composer. One of the most famous performers of the late 19th century. Born in Kitsee (now Hungary) near Bratislava, he showed musical talent from an early age, and held his first public concert in 1839 at the age of seven. After studying under G. Hermesberger (1800-1873) at the Vienna Conservatory, he entered the Leipzig Conservatory in 1843. He subsequently served as concertmaster of the Weimar Court Orchestra conducted by Franz Liszt, and developed close friendships with Franz Mendelssohn, R. Schumann and his wife, and Brahms. In 1868, he became the first director of the Berlin Higher School of Music, and in the following year, 1869, he organized the Joachim String Quartet. He also gained the highest reputation in Germany as a soloist, and concertos were dedicated to Schumann, Bruch, Brahms, and Dvorak. Among his pupils were such renowned violinists as Auer and Hungarian Hubai Jené (1858-1937), who had a great influence on subsequent violin styles. → Nikisch / Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra / Rubinstein
