Obi parent - Obioya

Japanese:
Obi parent - Obioya

A type of temporary parent appointed during infancy. This custom is found throughout Kyushu. In Enoshima, Kisato-cho, Saikai City, Nagasaki Prefecture, an obi parent is appointed at the "obi-toki celebration" when a girl turns three years old. The obi-toki celebration celebrates the moment when the child stops wearing the obi strings attached to the kimono and starts tying the kimono with an obi, and the obi parent presents the obi with a prayer for the child's safe growth. In Kimotsuki District, Kagoshima Prefecture, it is decided that the obi parent will be an aunt.
