Born: May 22, 1833, Paris [Died] October 29, 1914. Paris. French painter and printmaker. At the age of 15, he worked as an apprentice in lithography, and engraved lithographs by H. Holbein and E. Delacroix. He studied under J. Guichot. He exhibited his first self-portrait at the Salon in 1852, and began exhibiting prints two years later. He loved to paint birds and animals, and often depicted ducks, geese, swallows, sheep, rabbits, and mice in his landscape paintings. He was in contact with E. Manet and other young impressionist painters, teaching them printmaking, and was also an early adopter of Japanese Edo art, as well as ukiyo-e. His oil paintings include the portrait of Goncourt. He also designed textiles and bookbinding, and painted ceramics. His books include Du dessin et de la couleur (1885) (On Drawing and Color).
