A waterway between Kegoya, Kure City and Kurahashi Island in the southwest of Hiroshima Prefecture. It is said that Taira no Kiyomori excavated this waterway to visit Itsukushima, and there is a legend that he used a fan to invite the setting sun back to proceed with the construction. It is 800 meters long. It is narrow and the current is strong, reaching up to 3 knots at its peak, making it a difficult spot for maritime traffic, as the song goes, "The oar is bending 15 feet long." In 1956, construction was carried out to widen the waterway and deepen the depth, making it easier to navigate. In 1961, the Ondo Bridge, 172 meters long and 23.5 meters high, was completed over this waterway. The approach roads on both ends are spiral. Kiyomori's grave is located near the bridge on the Kurahashi Island side. [Kitagawa Kenji] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
