A bird of the Anatidae family (illustration). It breeds in the northern part of the Eurasian continent and migrates to southern Europe, North Africa, and southern Asia in winter. It migrates to Japan as a winter bird and is found in large numbers in calm seas, estuaries, lakes, and rivers. It likes to eat eelgrass and sea lettuce, so it gathers in particularly shallow waters and estuaries. It also eats the buds and young roots of aquatic plants, grains, and in spring it also catches animal matter such as aquatic insects. Total length is about 49 cm. The male has a chestnut brown face and a cream-colored top of the head, making it easy to see from a distance.

カモ目カモ科の鳥（イラスト）。ユーラシア大陸の北部で繁殖し，冬季にはヨーロッパ南部，北アフリカ，南アジアに渡る。日本には冬鳥として渡来し，波静かな海上，河口，湖沼，河川などに生息していて数が多い。アマモ，アオサなどを好んで食べるので，とくに浅海や河口に多く集まる。そのほか水草の芽や若根，穀物などを食べ，春には水生昆虫などの動物質もとる。全長約49cm。雄はくり褐色の顔で，頭頂はクリーム色をしており，遠くからもよく目だつ。
