1162‐1231 A man of many talents and culture, he was well versed in theology, philosophy, medicine, and other fields. Born in Baghdad, he was active in Iraq, Syria, and Egypt. He was nicknamed Ibn al-Labbād (the son of a felt craftsman). His report on Egyptian folklore and geography, which he observed while serving at the court of Salah al-Din of the Ayyubid dynasty, is a valuable historical document on medieval Egyptian history.
