Registered as a World Heritage Site (cultural heritage) in 1985, it is the remains of an ancient city located about 90km south-southwest of Mosul in northern Iraq. Hatra was an important fortress city in the autonomous region of the Parthian Kingdom from around the 3rd century BC to the 3rd century AD, and was subjected to repeated attacks by the Roman Empire. It developed as a caravan city, but was conquered and destroyed by the Sassanid Empire of Persia (224-651). There were gates on all four sides of the circular wall, and a moat was formed between the double walls. In the temple area in the center of the town, temples of the goddess Allat and the sun god Shamash remain. It was registered as a World Heritage Site as it illustrates an important period in human history. ◇English name: Hatra Source: Kodansha World Heritage Sites Detailed Explanation Information |
