Emperor of France. Born into the Bonaparte family, an Italian landowner on the island of Corsica. He became an artillery officer, but was arrested after publishing a pamphlet in support of the Mountain Party. In 1795, he suppressed the Vendémiaire rebellion and made a comeback. He was appointed commander of the Italian expeditionary force by the Directory, where he demonstrated his skills. After returning from the Egyptian expedition in 1799, he overthrew the Directory in a coup d'état on 18 Brumaire, became First Consul himself, and marked the beginning of military dictatorship. He then conquered Italy and Austria, oppressed royalists and republicans, and became Emperor in 1804 (First Empire). During this time, he enacted the Napoleonic Code, rebuilt the education system, and concluded the Concordat. He also waged the Napoleonic Wars, aiming to conquer all of Europe, and issued the Continental System to oppose Britain. However, he failed in his invasion of Spain (Spanish War of Independence) and his campaign against Moscow, and was defeated in the War of Independence. He abdicated in 1814 and was exiled to the island of Elba. He recovered the following year, but was defeated in the Battle of Waterloo (the Hundred Days), and was exiled to the island of St. Helena, where he died. → Related topics Battle of Austerlitz | Invalides | Ideology | Ideologist | Houdon | Arc de Triomphe | Elba [island] | Charles [Archduke] | Treaty of Campo Formio | Gros | Corsica [island] | Sieyès | Consulate | Josephine | Simplon [pass] | Madame de Stael | Saint Helena [island] | Overture of 1812 | First Republic | Coalition | David | Cisalpino | Treaty of Tilsit | Toussaint Louverture | Battle of Trafalgar | Napoleon [III] | Franc (currency) | France | French Revolution | Bank of France | Treaty of Pressburg | Bonapartism | Bonaparte [house] | Marie Louise | Edict of Milan | Confederation of the Rhine Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
