Born in the 4th year of Cheoljong's reign. Arrived in Japan in 1891. Immediately after the outbreak of the Sino-Japanese War, he overthrew the Min regime with the support of Japan, and thereafter played a central role in the Gabo regime. After the assassination of Queen Min, he approached pro-Russian forces, killed pro-Japanese forces, and exiled them. In 1898, he was found out to have plotted to have the King (Gojong) abdicate, and fled to Japan. He returned to Korea in 1900 (4th year of Gwangmu), but was arrested the same year and executed on May 27th. He was 48 years old.
