Stapelia - Stapelia

Japanese:
Stapelia - Stapelia

A general term for the genus Stapelia in the family Asclepiadaceae (APG classification: Apocynaceae). A succulent perennial plant, generally dwarf. It is mainly native to South Africa, but there are many hybrids, and it is potted and cultivated in greenhouses. The stems are columnar, branching at the base and growing in clusters. The leaves are degenerate, small, claw-like, and fall off quickly. The flowers are star-shaped with a corona, 1 to 5 at the bottom of the stem, and come in black-brown or spotted, or occasionally pale yellow. They flower from summer to autumn. The smell of rotting meat attracts flies and can cause the development of maggots. Commonly cultivated varieties include Oobanasaikaku (large rhinoceros horn), Ousaikaku (royal rhinoceros horn), and Gyukaku (cow horn). They are usually propagated by division, but can also be grown from seed.
