A general term for books printed on a non-profit basis by monks at temples. In Japan, during the Heian period, surikyou memorial services (printing sutras to hold memorial services) were first held to replace sutra copying, but most of them were for praying for the repose of the dead and for the elimination of sins. The most famous temple editions include the Kasuga edition, which was mainly published by Kofuku-ji Temple in Nara, the Koya edition, which was published at Mount Koya from the early Kamakura period, the Daigoji edition, which was published at Daigo-ji Temple, the Hiei edition, the Jodo edition, which was mainly published at Chion-in Temple in Kyoto, the Nara edition, which was published by the various large temples in Nara (Todai-ji Temple, Saidai-ji Temple, etc.), and the Gozan edition, which was mainly published at the five mountains in Kyoto from the Kamakura period through the Northern and Southern Courts (14th century) to the end of the Muromachi period (16th century).
