...Although it has not been reported from the waters off Japan, it has been collected from the deep seas of the South Pacific to eastern Australia, at depths of over 800m. Four species of Saccopharyngidae fishes are known worldwide, but the total number of collected individuals is said to be less than 20. A closely related family is the Saccopharyngidae, which differs in that the mouth shape is similar to that of a pelican and the dorsal fin starts from the head.
