…Compared to the histories of the Indies written by his contemporaries G. F. Oviedo and Antonio de Herrera, Acosta’s work is characterized by being far more systematic and objective. In this work and in his “De procuranda indorum salute” (1588), Acosta attempted to classify the cultural spheres of various ethnic groups and conceived a kind of global theory of developmental stages, which is also notable as a pioneering attempt in sociological and anthropological terms. As one of the outstanding intellectuals born out of the 16th century Jewish convert community, Acosta has great historical significance beyond the bounds of the church. …
