Emperor of the French. Nephew of Napoleon I. Called himself Louis Napoleon, his full name was Charles Louis Napoleon Bonaparte. He returned from exile during the February Revolution of 1848 and became president. In 1851 he was elected president for a 10-year term by a coup d'état and popular vote, and in 1852 he became emperor (Second Empire). During his period of autocratic rule until 1860, he promoted policies of foreign expansion and protection of the interests of industrial capital. The Second Empire was then in crisis due to the failure of the Mexican intervention (1861-1867).
