Ellora - Ellora (English spelling)

Ellora - Ellora (English spelling)

A group of early medieval rock-cut temples located 20 km northwest of Aurangabad, India. Currently part of the state of Maharashtra, the group stretches for about 2 km on the slope of a rocky mountain that runs north to south east of the village of Ellora, and consists of 34 main caves and several other smaller caves. Caves 1 to 12 are Buddhist and date back to the 7th century, caves 13 to 29 are Hindu and date back to the 7th to 8th centuries, and caves 30 to 34 are Jain and date back to the 9th to 12th centuries, covering the major religions of India. Architecturally, the most interesting of all the caves is Cave 16, Kailasanatha, which is not a rock cave but a single stone temple structure carved out of a huge block of rock that was separated from the rock. It measures 49 meters wide, 85 meters deep, and 30 meters high. The walls of each cave are covered with carvings, and caves 14 to 16 in particular are masterpieces of Hindu sculpture, with statues of all kinds of Hindu gods on display. There are also many excellent Jain statues in cave 34. These caves were registered as a World Heritage Site in 1983 (World Cultural Heritage).
