A school of painting that developed in the early modern period, centered in Naples, Italy. It was during the Baroque period that artistic activity in Naples flourished to the point that it could be called a school, and the Neapolitan School is often used to refer to the painters who were active in the city in the 17th century. In the 17th century, Naples was ruled by a viceroy from Spain, and it was a place of international exchange. Caravaggio's stays in 1607 and 1610 were a major inspiration for local artists, and under his influence Giovanni Battista Caracciolo (commonly known as Battistello) was born.
