…(1) On June 22, 1908, at Kinkikan in Kanda, Tokyo, a clash occurred between socialists and police after a party to welcome Yamaguchi Koken (Gizo) back from prison. At the time, socialist forces were largely divided into two factions: the direct action faction (hard-line faction) led by Osugi Sakae, and the parliamentary policy faction (soft faction) led by Katayama Sen. Since Yamaguchi had been imprisoned for a pen-related scandal and was not directly involved in the factional issue, the two factions came together for the first time in a long time to hold a grand welcome party. …
