A biennial plant of the family Dipodium (APG classification: Caprifoliaceae). The stems are 1-1.5 meters tall. The leaves are opposite and pinnately lobed, with the terminal lobe being the largest. Both the stems and leaves have stiff, prickly hairs. From August to October, elliptical flower heads grow at the end of long stalks. The corolla is reddish purple, tubular with four lobes at the end. It grows on roadsides and in fields in hilly and mountainous areas, and is distributed from Honshu to Kyushu, as well as the Korean Peninsula and China. The name comes from the resemblance of the flower head, which resembles a pot. The flower heads of the dipteran genus are spherical or elliptical, and the involucre and flower receptacle scales are hard. There are about 15 species in the world, and only this species grows wild in Japan, with the cultivated species being the giant teasel.
