External preparations. Semi-solid ointments made by mixing drugs with bases such as lanolin, petrolatum, and beeswax to make them easier to apply to the skin. Ointments with bases such as glycerin, sodium lauryl sulfate, and stearyl alcohol are called hydrophilic ointments, and are more easily absorbed by the skin than oil-based ointments. In recent years, preparations have been developed that allow drugs to be absorbed through the skin and are expected to have the same effects as oral medications.

外用剤。薬物をラノリン，ワセリン，蜜蝋などの基剤に配合して，皮膚に塗布しやすくした半固形の膏薬。グリセリン，ラウリル硫酸ナトリウム，ステアリルアルコールなどを基剤としたものは親水軟膏といい，油性の軟膏に比べて皮膚面に密着しやすく吸収がよい。近年，薬物を皮膚面より吸収させて経口薬と同様の効果を期待する製剤が開発されている。
