External preparations. Semi-solid ointments made by mixing drugs with bases such as lanolin, petrolatum, and beeswax to make them easier to apply to the skin. Ointments with bases such as glycerin, sodium lauryl sulfate, and stearyl alcohol are called hydrophilic ointments, and are more easily absorbed by the skin than oil-based ointments.
