A bird of the Crane family (illustration). It is about 1m long. Males are slightly larger than females. The body is slate gray, the head and neck are white, and the top of the head has bare red skin. The forehead is black. The beak is yellow or dark yellow, and the legs are black. It breeds in southeastern Siberia and winters in eastern China, the Korean peninsula, and Japan. However, in recent years, there are very few cranes that winter in China or the Korean peninsula, and Japan has become the main wintering ground for this species. About 6,000 Hooded Cranes migrate to Araki, Izumi City, Kagoshima Prefecture, and the surrounding agricultural areas every winter to spend the winter.

ツル目ツル科の鳥（イラスト）。全長約1m。雄は雌よりわずかに大きい。体は石板灰色で，頭頸（とうけい）部は白く，頭頂は赤い皮膚が裸出する。額は黒い。くちばしは黄色ないし暗黄色，脚は黒い。シベリア南東部で繁殖し，中国東部，朝鮮半島，日本で越冬する。しかし，最近は中国および朝鮮半島で越冬するものはほとんどなく，日本がこの種の主要な越冬地となっている。鹿児島県出水（いずみ）市荒崎とその周辺の農耕地帯には毎冬約6000羽のナベヅルが渡来し越冬する。
