Weighted average

Also called the weighted average. When the values ​​of the variables are x 1 , x 2 , …, x N and the corresponding weights are w 1 , w 2 , …, w N , respectively, the average is calculated using the following formula:


In particular, if w1 = w2 = ... = wN , then this formula becomes the arithmetic mean ( x1 + x2 + ... + xN )/N. This is sometimes called the simple average as opposed to the weighted average. For example, when the retail price of a certain item is surveyed at several stores, it is more reasonable to use a weighted average, where the retail price at each store is weighted by the sales volume at that store, as the average value, than a simple average. Weighted averages are also often used when calculating various economic indices such as the price index. The weighted geometric mean, given by the following formula,

とくにw1=w2=……=wNとすれば、この式は算術平均(x1+x2+……+xN)/Nになる。これを加重平均に対して単純平均とよぶことがある。たとえば、ある品物の小売価格をいくつかの販売店について調査したとき、その平均値としては、各店の小売価格に、その店の販売量を重みとして対応させた加重平均を用いるほうが、単純平均によるよりも合理的である。物価指数など各種の経済指数を求める際にもしばしば加重平均が用いられる。なお、次の式で与えられる加重幾何平均
