Bode's law
An empirical law that applies to the distance between the Sun and planets. It is also known as the Titius-Bode law. It was first proposed in 1766 by German astronomer Johann Daniel Titius, and was popularized by German Johann Elard Bode after 1772. It was once thought to have potential importance in relation to the formation of the solar system, but today Bode's law is merely a strange sequence of numbers with no special basis.
One way of stating Bode's law is as follows. First, consider a sequence of numbers, such as 0, 3, 6, 12, 24, etc., where each number after the 3 is doubled. Add 4 to each number and divide by 10. The first seven are 0.4, 0.7, 1.0, 1.6, 2.8, 5.2, and 10.0. With the exception of 2.8, six of the numbers correspond to the distances of the six planets (Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn) known at the time of Titius, expressed in astronomical units (the average distance between the Sun and the Earth, written as AU), from the Sun. Numerous asteroids have been found between Mars and Jupiter, at a distance of about 2.8 AU from the Sun, since the discovery of the asteroid Ceres in 1801. This law also applies to the seventh planet, Uranus, discovered in 1781, about 19 AU away. However, it is not possible to accurately predict the distance of Neptune, the eighth planet discovered in 1846, nor does it apply to Pluto, which was thought to be a planet when it was discovered in 1930.

太陽と惑星の距離の間に成り立つ経験的な法則。チチウス・ボーデの法則ともいう。 1766年にドイツの天文学者ヨハン・ダニエル・チチウスによって初めて提唱され,ドイツ人のヨハン・エラート・ボーデによって 1772年以降広められた。かつては太陽系の形成との関連で重要性をもつ可能性が考えられたが,現在では,ボーデの法則は特別な根拠をもたない奇妙な数の列でしかない。
ボーデの法則の一つの言い方は,次のようになる。まず,0,3,6,12,24,…のように3のあとの数がそれぞれの2倍になっている数列を考える。各数字に4を加えて,10で割算する。最初の七つは,0.4,0.7,1.0,1.6,2.8,5.2,10.0となり,2.8を例外として,六つの数が,チチウスの当時に知られていた六つの惑星 (水星,金星,地球,火星,木星,土星 ) と,太陽との距離を天文単位 (太陽と地球の平均距離。 AUと書く) で表したものと一致する。火星と木星の間にくる,太陽から約 2.8AUの距離には,1801年にケレスという小惑星が発見されて以来多数の小惑星が見つかっている。この法則は,1781年に発見された約 19AUのところにある第7惑星天王星にもあてはまった。しかし,1846年に発見された第8惑星の海王星の距離を正確に予測することはできず,また,1930年の発見当時には惑星と考えられた冥王星にもあてはまらない。
