The central bank of the Netherlands. Founded in 1814. Nationalized in 1948, the president, directors, and secretary-general are appointed by the government. In addition, a 12-member council decides and reviews major issues. Immediately after the Netherlands regained independence from Napoleon's rule, the bank was established as a joint-stock company with capital of 5 million guilders to handle ticket issuing and discounting services, under the strong initiative of the new King William I, as a pillar of the Dutch economic reconstruction and modernization policy. However, the Dutch economy was in a slump at the time, and there was little demand for such commercial credit, so subscriptions to the shares were low, and the state took on 20% of them, and the King also became a major investor in his personal capacity.
