1876‐1949 A Yugoslav literary figure. Croatian, born on the island of Brač. He studied natural sciences at the University of Graz, and worked as a middle school teacher, moving from coast to coast. He established his literary reputation with his epic poem The Legend of the Slavs (1900) and his novel Jože the Giant (1908), based on a legend from the Istrian peninsula. He was very active in the literary world, including translating, and when his homeland became a battlefield, he joined a partisan unit despite his advanced age, inspiring many people. After liberation, he served in various positions, including Chairman of the Executive Council of the Croatian Parliament.
