Ominato - Ominato

Japanese: 大湊 - おおみなと

This is a former town area in the northern part of Ise City in central eastern Mie Prefecture. It is located in the northern part of the Shima Peninsula, facing Ise Bay. It was incorporated as a town in 1889, and was incorporated into Ujiyamada City in 1943 (which was renamed Ise City in 1955). It is the oldest port town in Ise Bay, and has long flourished as the outer port of Ise Shrine. It is also known as a shipbuilding town, and there are records that the town procured warships and accompanied Toyotomi Hideyoshi as engineers when he invaded Korea. Kadoya Shichirojiro's Goshuinsen also belonged here, and the town was engaged in overseas trade. In recent years, the shipbuilding industry has declined, and the town is now a popular recreational base for clam digging, fishing, and other activities.

Ominato

This area faces Ominato Bay, southeast of Mutsu City, located at the base of the Shimokita Peninsula in northeastern Aomori Prefecture. For 45 years before World War II, it flourished as a military port protecting the North Sea, but after the war it was used by the U.S. military and then the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force. In November 1967, it became the home port of the world's fourth nuclear ship, the Mutsu. Later, due to opposition from fishermen, it was removed as a home port. It is now a tourist spot on the Shimokita Peninsula.

大湊

青森県北東部，下北半島の基部に位置するむつ市の南東部，大湊湾に面する地域。第2次世界大戦前の 45年間，北洋を守る軍港として栄えたが，戦後はアメリカ軍，次いで海上自衛隊に使用されている。 1967年 11月には世界で4番目の原子力船『むつ』号の母港となった。その後漁民の反対もあって，母港撤去となった。下北半島の観光拠点となっている。
