Wang Wen-zhi

A Chinese calligrapher and painter in the mid-Qing dynasty. A native of Dantu (Jiangsu province). His courtesy name was Yuqing and his pen name was Dream Tower. He was a Jinshi in 1770 (the 35th year of the Qianlong era). He passed the Imperial Examination with third place, and after working as an editor and lecturer at the Hanlin Academy, he became the governor of Lin'an in Yunnan, but he soon retired from the post and lived an elegant life in later years. He was a man of great talent, and was praised for his poetry on a par with Yuan Mei. His calligraphy was based on the works of Zhao Zi'ang and Dong Qichang, and he was a master of the Qing dynasty calligraphy school, with a gentle and dignified style. He was skilled in painting plum blossoms, chrysanthemums, bamboo, and stone, and was famous for being a believer in Buddhism and a daily vegetarian. He passed away in April of the 7th year of the Jiaqing era, sitting on the floor in his room.

中国、清(しん)朝中期の書画家。丹徒(江蘇(こうそ)省)の人。字(あざな)は禹卿(うけい)、号は夢楼(ぼうろう)。1770年(乾隆35)の進士。殿試に第三位で合格し、翰林院(かんりんいん)編修、侍講を経て、雲南臨安知府となったが、まもなく退官し、後年は文雅な生活を送った。天分豊かで、詩は袁枚(えんばい)と並び称され、書は趙子昂(ちょうすごう)、董其昌(とうきしょう)を宗として穏和で風格が高く、清代帖学派(ちょうがくは)の大家と仰がれる。画は梅、菊、竹石に巧みであり、仏法を信奉し、日々菜食したことは有名である。嘉慶(かけい)7年4月、室中に趺坐(ふざ)して卒す。著に『夢楼詩集』がある。
