Hirosaki [city] - Hirosaki
A city in the central-west of Aomori Prefecture, in the southern part of the Tsugaru Plain. It was incorporated as a city in 1889. The central city developed as a castle town for the Tsugaru clan, and was a military city until the end of World War II, after the 8th Army Division was established in 1897. After World War II, it became an educational city with two universities and two junior colleges, including Hirosaki National University. It is connected to the Ou Main Line, Konan Railway, and Tohoku Expressway. It is the center of Aomori apple and Tsugaru rice production, and is famous for Tsugaru lacquerware, Kogin, and Tsugaru ware. In addition to Hirosaki Castle, a famous cherry blossom spot, there is Mt. Iwaki in the west, and hot springs are scattered at the foot of the mountain. The Nebuta Festival in August is famous. In February 2006, Iwaki Town and Soma Village of Nakatsugaru County were incorporated. The city suffered damage in the Great East Japan Earthquake. 524.20 km 2 . 183,473 people (2010).

青森県中西部,津軽平野南部の市。1889年市制。中心市街は津軽氏の城下町として発達,1897年の陸軍第8師団設置後第2次大戦終結までは軍都であった。第2次大戦後は国立弘前大学ほか2大学,2短期大学のある文教都市となった。奥羽本線,弘南鉄道,東北自動車道が通じる。青森リンゴ,津軽米の産地の中心地で,津軽塗,小衣(こぎん),津軽焼を特産。桜の名所弘前城のほか,西部に岩木山があり,山麓に温泉が点在する。8月のねぶた祭は有名。2006年2月中津軽郡岩木町,相馬村を編入。東日本大震災で,市内において被害が発生。524.20km2。18万3473人(2010)。
