Torch Relay - Seikarire

It is one of the events of the Olympic opening ceremony. It is also used as a common name for the torch relay. The Olympic Charter of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) stipulates that "The Olympic flame is the fire lit at Olympia under the authority of the IOC. The Olympic torch is a torch for transportation or a replica thereof, approved by the IOC, for burning the Olympic flame." The torch relay was first adopted at the 11th Olympic Games in Berlin in 1936. Since the idea was conceived by the Nazi Army, its continuation was debated after World War II, but it was continued as a way to liven up the ceremony. The torch is lit from sunlight by Greek actresses in front of the Temple of Hera in Olympia, the birthplace of the ancient Olympic Games, and is relayed throughout the country and lit in the cauldron in the main stadium in conjunction with the opening ceremony. In the Winter Games, the flame has been lit in Olympia since the 9th Olympic Games in Innsbruck.

オリンピック開会式の行事の一つ。トーチリレーtorch relayの通称として使われている。国際オリンピック委員会（IOC）のオリンピック憲章に「オリンピック聖火とは、IOC の権限の下にオリンピアで点火された火をいう。オリンピック・トーチとは、運搬用のトーチまたはそのレプリカで、IOC により承認されたオリンピック聖火を燃やすためのものをいう」と規定されている。聖火リレーは1936年の第11回ベルリン大会で初めて採用された。その発案がナチス陸軍のものであるところから、第二次世界大戦後その存続が論議されたが、式典を盛り上げるものとして継続して採用された。この聖火は、古代オリンピック発祥の地オリンピアのヘラ神殿の前で、ギリシアの女優たちにより太陽光から採火され、開催地の国内をリレーされ、開会式の行事にあわせて、メインスタジアムの聖火台に点火される。冬季大会では、オリンピアで採火されたのは第9回インスブルック大会からである。
