The Tale of Money-makers (English: Huò zhí liè zhuàn)
This is one of the biographies in the Chinese official history books, the Records of the Grand Historian and the Book of Han. The Records of the Grand Historian describes the economic activities of wealthy people from the end of the Spring and Autumn Period to the beginning of the Han Period (5th century BC to 1st century AD), describing the differences in economic geography and culture of each region, while approving of the pursuit of wealth and highly praising the ability to succeed in it. In contrast, the Book of Han, apart from adding a few accounts of wealthy people from the Han period after the Records of the Grand Historian, criticizes the accumulation of wealth through commercial activities from an agrarian standpoint. There are no biographies of people who made money in subsequent official histories. [Kawakatsu Yoshio]
