Kizil Caves

Japanese: キジル石窟 - キジルせっくつ
Kizil Caves
A Buddhist site dating from the 5th to 7th century near Kucha, 7km southeast of Kizil Town, Baicheng County, Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, China. Produced by the Iranian Tocharians, the early cave temples consist of square cave chambers with vaults and raised ceilings, and the interior murals are a continuation of Gandharan art. In the later period, the number of tunnel-shaped ceilings increased, and the murals feature southern Buddhist themes, with the influence of Sassanid Persia and Byzantine styles also evident in the composition and form.
