Gamelan is a form of the verb "gamel," meaning to "hit" or "manipulate," and the name is used because "that which is hit," i.e., percussion instruments, form the center of the ensemble. There are various types of gamelan depending on the size of the ensemble and the types of instruments that make up the ensemble, and the name of the main melodic instrument or a word that describes the characteristics of the music is added to the end of gamelan. For example, gamelan angklung (bamboo percussion instrument) and gamelan kebyar (meaning "flash of light")...
