A town in Miyako County facing the Suo Nada Sea in northeastern Fukuoka Prefecture. The Nippō Main Line and the Higashi-Kyushu Expressway pass through the town. During the Taisho period, a cement industry was established in the town, taking advantage of the town's abundant limestone and coal. After the war, Kanda Port was completed and developed into a coal and cement shipping port. A thermal power plant was also built and the town became an industrial port area. 福岡県北東部,周防(すおう)灘に臨む京都(みやこ)郡の町。日豊本線,東九州自動車道が通じる。大正期豊富な石灰石と石炭を利用するセメント工業が立地,戦後築港が完成した苅田港が石炭・セメント積出港として発展,火力発電所もでき港湾工業地となった。御所山古墳(史跡),青竜窟(天然記念物)がある。48.88km2。3万6005人(2010)。
