True number - 真番 (English spelling) Zhen fan

Japanese: 真番 - しんばん（英語表記）Zhēn fān

One of the four Han commanderies established by Emperor Wu of Han after destroying the Wiman Joseon Kingdom in 108 BC. Zhenfan Commandery was abolished just 27 years after its establishment, so there are various theories about its location. The main theories are divided into two: the north theory, represented by Shiratori Kurayoshi, which says it was located north of Lelang, and the south theory, represented by Inaba Iwayoshi, Imanishi Ryu, Suematsu Yasukazu, and Li Byeong-tao, which says it was located south of Lelang, but the theories do not agree on details and there are objections. Currently, the south theory is the most widely accepted. An important basic document on this issue is an article on the distance of Zhenfan Commandery in the observations of the Maoling Book, which is quoted in the annotations of the Book of Han, and how to interpret this is crucial.

前108年，漢の武帝が衛氏朝鮮国を滅ぼしたのち設立した漢四郡の一つ。真番郡は設立後27年ではやくも廃止されたので，その所在地の比定をめぐって諸説がある。そのおもなものは白鳥庫吉などに代表される楽浪以北にあったとする以北説と，稲葉岩吉，今西竜，末松保和，李丙燾などに代表される楽浪以南説とに分かれるが，諸説はまたそれぞれに細かい点で一致せず異論がある。現在はほぼ以南説におちついている。この問題についての重要な基本的文献は，《漢書》分注引用の〈茂陵書〉所見の真番郡の里程に関する記事で，これをいかに解するかが決め手になる。
