Hatago

Japanese:
Hatago
An inn with meals that provided lodging for samurai and ordinary people at post stations in the Edo period. Originally, the word "hatago" was said to have referred to a low bamboo cage used to store horse rations. Hatago as an inn was established in the early Edo period and replaced the traditional wooden-type inns, but its distinctive feature was that the innkeeper cooked and served the meals to the guests. From the mid-Edo period, they differentiated into flat inns that only provided lodging for travelers and meal-serving inns that employed women. The buildings of inns were slightly smaller in size, with the upper level room, gate, and entrance removed from honjin and other buildings, and were classified into large, medium, and small. Priority was given to providing lodging to feudal lords and officials, but as the number of ordinary people passing by increased, more importance was placed on ordinary travelers as well. The number of inns also increased, and associations that could be considered the forerunners of inn associations, such as Naniwa-ko, were formed in various places. → Wooden accommodation → Related topics Imasu|Ejiri|Travel pass|Inns and stations|Inns and villages general register|Shirasuka|Takamiya|Toriimoto|Narai|Hara|Banba-juku|Yoshida|Inns
